Cisco Predicts Online Video to be 91% of global consumer traffic by 2014

Cisco video conferencing growthThe ongoing march and dominance of YouTube and recent high profile launch of Google TV has lead to a lot of general speculation about the impact of online video on internet traffic in the coming years.  With the recent release of its Visual Networking Index forecast, Cisco has attempted to put a figure on that.

Highlights from the forecast:

  • Online video content (TV, video on demand, Internet, and P2P) to rise from a third of overall consumer internet traffic (its current position) to 90% by 2014
  • Internet video alone will account for 57 percent of all consumer Internet traffic by 2014
  • Video over instant messaging and video calling traffic is accelerating fast and is predicted to grow sevenfold in the period running up to 2014.
  • Video-on-demand (VoD) traffic will experience a 4-fold increase over thes 5 years
  • Web-based video conferencing will grow 180-fold in the period, with HD video conferencing accounting for 57% of business video conferencing traffic in 2014
