GETTING MORE FROM YOUR
SERVERS THROUGH VIRTUALISATION

A global sports retailer required complete stability and security in their network infrastructure to keep the website fully operational.

Business Challenge

An exclusively online business, this global sports retailer relies on their website 100% for product display and customer orders and, as such, requires complete stability and security in their network infrastructure to keep the website fully operational.

Needing to accommodate significant growth in traffic over the last few years, the current infrastructure had been ‘bolted’ together as and when required with no consistency or overarching plan in place. This led to high costs, limited capacity and vulnerable points of failure which jeopardised the company’s financial security and future growth plans. There were also considerable bottlenecks in traffic flowing between presentation servers managing the front-end display of the site and the application servers handling the e-commerce functionality.

Business Solution

After a complete audit of the customer’s server and storage systems in their datacentre, Hardware.com recommended a virtualisation solution in the form of load-balanced ‘workload pods’.

This means hardware is consolidated to get greater productivity from fewer servers. The original separate presentation and application servers become ‘pods’ within a single server which runs at a higher percentage of its capacity. This system reduces hardware, storage and operational expenses and is also much more scalable, allowing for future growth.

Furthermore, the software offers data protection in the form of back-up and recovery and, in the event of hardware failure, applications are automatically restarted on another machine. This gives the customer reassurance that their website will be operational 100% of the time, maximising their customer reach and service ability.

Hardware.com was able to provide seamless design and implementation services to complement the customer’s stretched internal IT department and achieve a move from the previous restrictive architecture to a scalable and secure platform on which the customer could easily expand.
